The Arranged Marriage
Even if things seem bad, they turn out for the best. I screamed in my head as my mother told me the news. How could she do this to me?! “I have arranged a marriage for you” she said to me. After dad had died, my mom had gone through a whole lot. We have become bankrupt, moved into a very small apartment, and we both had to get two jobs. As I screamed at my mother, she tried to calm me down by saying how it will benefit the both of us. “He comes from a very wealthy family, has a great education, and can take care of both of us!” you could hear the excitement in her voice. At that moment I was considering to run away and forget about what just happened. “Mom you can’t just use me like that to make your life better!” My mother sat on the couch, “Honey listen, this if for the both of us, not me, just think about all of the possibilities that you could get from this.” I pace back and forth in the living room ‘is this really happening, why me?’ I thought as many things raced through my head. “Mom I won't do it, I just can’t this is crazy.” “I’m sorry but the deal has already been settled, the young man's parents have also agreed to this.” my mother gets up from the couch. “Also make sure to dress nicely on Friday because him and his parents are taking us out so you two can get to know each other more” my mother says as she smiles widely and she exits the room. I couldn't take it anymore and ran outside slamming the door, I needed some time to think to myself. A thought ran through my mind like a car crashing into a wall ‘How am I going to tell Ruby?’ Ruby is Andy’s partner, they have been together for two years. Andy has never told her mother about her girlfriend as she despises those who are attracted to the same gender, as it is “going against god.” I decided to go to Ruby’s house and tell her about everything that happened. As I knocked on the door waiting for her to answer a tall, beautiful short hair girl opened the door with one of the happiest smiles I have ever seen before. When she made eye contact with me I broke down crying, ‘is she going to hate me, what did she deserve to get involved in this?’ Her smile disappeared and asked me “Andy what’s wrong?” I started shaking trying to make the words come out but I couldn't. She calmed me down as best as she could as soon as she started to see me cry and I told her. “My mother has arranged a marriage for me.” That was when everything stopped, she just stared at me. Pain flashed across her eyes. “What… why, you can't!” I started to feel guilty. “I don’t want to ether, she's just using me like she always does and if I don't do it, who knows what she'll do to me.” We sat in silence for a while on her porch as the wind blew against the leafs of the trees. Ruby suddenly sprung up in excitement like a little kid would on the last day of school. “I have an idea!” “What is it?” I asked sounding confused. “Why don’t we just run away and forget about all of this, just you and I.” I was shocked by this. “We can’t just leave Ruby, what about everything we have here all of our memories, I can’t just leave my mom.” “Listen I love you and you love me, just forget about the past it will only break us more than it already has, we can always make new memories together. And your mom well, we can leave her some money to help her out for a few months” She was right the past will bring me down and break me. Maybe I should consider leaving. She is mom mother and I love her to death but sometimes you just have to leave and start your own life and stop being stuck in the past. “Okay, let's do it.” “Perfect! We will leave tonight, the sooner the better.” We hugged each other. I can't believe we're doing this! “Andy don’t forget I love you.” “I love you too Ruby.”
