Friendship
Isn’t crazy how someone that was very close to you is now a complete stranger? It was a cold October morning and the clock ticked as it came to 8:05. This is the time that the Arlington Collegiate High School students go to breakfast. We were all on our way as if we were a bunch of kids wanting candy. The lunchroom had an aroma of cinnamon toast and freshly cooked bacon. Layla and Abby ran into each other and sit at their usual spot. These girls have known each other for a year now and they have always had an inseparable bond.
“Layla, I have been looking everywhere for you”, says Abby. “Abby, I was waiting for you to come to my advisory, but you never showed up”, says Layla. The two girls talk to each other as if they haven’t seen each other in forever. After breakfast, they each go to their classes and meet back up at lunch. Over the past weeks, Abby has noticed that Layla has been hanging out with others and leaving her, but she doesn’t think much of it because they are really close. The next day, Layla decides to sit with another table and leaves Abby all by herself. “Where are you going Layla”, says Abby. Rudely Layla says, “Well can I sit with them for today because we always sit together. With a look of confusion on her face, Abby feels a little upset that her best friend is going to leave her today. The whole day Layla has had an attitude with Abby for no reason, and other people have noticed it too. Abby feels like she needs to talk to her about it because the other day they were perfectly fine. There was no room for attitude in the friendship and Abby wasn’t going to take it anymore. “Layla, what’s been going on with us”, says Abby. “Well, we always hangout and I sometimes feel like you get annoying and we need some time apart”, says Layla. They both talked so much that it sounded like a broken record player that kept repeating itself. They finally come to a consensus and decide that they need some distance. They both admit that they each have been getting on each other’s nerves, but they kept quiet until now. They felt that this was the solution because the time apart could show them if they were capable of living life without each other. Of course they could manage that, but it could test to see how strong their friendship was. Over the past few weeks, everyone has been scrutinizing the two girls because it was strange that they weren’t together all the time anymore. Layla and Abby both kept away from each other and started hanging out with different people. They missed each other a lot, but maybe it was time for them to get closer to more than one person. Since, they did this, the girls got closer and closer to others and fell distant with each other. They both seemed really happy without each other and so they started to accept the fact that this splitting up was a good thing.
It has been over a year now and the girls still don’t talk and have had a great life. They would walk past each other as if they were invisible to each other. The groups that they hung out with would converge at times and they had no choice, but to talk to each other. It was always just a, “Hey, how was your day”, and then it turned into silence. They are both juniors and they have grown so much apart that people would forget that they were ever best friends.
