The Lighthouse of Laurence cove
It was a normal Sunday night in Laurence Cove or that’s what it seemed.
“Ok Johnny time for bed!” My mom yelled to me.
“Ok mom!” I yelled back. I jumped into bed, pulled over the covers and already started to fall asleep when flashing lights peered into my second story bedroom. What was that? I thought to myself. I just thought it had to be my imagination, so I closed my eyes, and tried to fall back asleep.
But then the lights came once again into my bedroom, and I jumped out of my bed and ran over to the window to see the old abandoned lighthouse flashing its lights. How could that be? Didn’t that place close down 20 years ago when the lighthouse keeper died? As soon as I took a closer look at the lighthouse, I saw a man in a rusty scuba diving outfit with seaweed all over his body walking around sending off all of the lights. He quickly stared right at me, and then ran away. Thoughts rushed through my head. Did I really just see that? I rushed to my phone to call my friends, Jenny and Danny. As I like to call them The Brains and The Brawns. Jenny is known as the smartest girl in school. She has won every spelling bee thrown at her and has a 100.0 grade average. Danny is the biggest, strongest, and most muscular kid in school. He is basically the star of every sports team he has ever played on. I dialed the numbers into the phone to call Jenny, but she didn’t pick up. “She must still be mad about that little fight we had a couple of days ago. Since my dad died I haven’t been so nice to my friends” I thought. I then called Danny, but it took a couple of calls until he finally picked up.
“Danny is that you?”
“Yes, and why exactly are you calling me at 11:30 on a Sunday night,” Danny said in a confused and tired voice.
“You didn’t see the abandoned lighthouse flashing it’s lights,” I said in a whispered voice trying not to wake my mom.
“No. I was lifting weights trying to train for my big football championship game in two days,” Danny said.
“Danny, you have to trust me on this one,” I said
“Are you sure.”, Danny said.
“100% positive.”, I replied
“But we have to talk another time. I have to get some rest for school tomorrow.”, Danny said.
“After school meet me at the lighthouse. We’ll find out what this really is all about,” I said.
“But you have a plan right?” Danny asked
“Not really. I was hoping you could cover on that one,” I said back
RIIING RIIING the bell went as the school day ended. Ok I've got to find Danny. As soon as I caught a good glimpse of him I started to run in his direction. Then I bumped into somebody that looked familiar. I turned my head to see Jenny on the ground.
“Sorry Jenny,” I said.
“It's fine. Not a big deal,” she said.
“Well I was hoping I would run into you because I was wondering if you wanted to come to the lighthouse today with me and Danny to try to solve this mystery. I hope you can come because your probably the smartest person I know, ” I said.
“I guess I can come,” she said.
“Ok, so I’ll see you later. Remember be at the lighthouse at five,” I said.
Waves crashed and sand crunched as I walked along the beach on a windy October Monday evening. Ever since my dad died everything has been a big blur. It’s like I just dropped interest in everything, I’m still lucky my friends don’t hate me. Once I reached the lighthouse I spotted my two friends sitting on a log by the boarded up lighthouse.
“Hey guys!” I shouted to try to get their attention.
“Hey Johnny, so we think we found our way in,” Danny said as he pointed to a cracked window.
They all climbed in to see an old dusty room full of cobwebs and cracked pictures. We all walked towards a balcony to look for the man I saw last night. Just as I pulled my other leg carefully over the broken glass in the window, I heard a crack and ran. The balcony broke, Jenny and Danny dove to safety while the balcony crashed into the cold and rocky waters. I heard a loud SPLASH of water . I looked down into the water, and all I saw was cracked concrete and stone sinking into the water . Then I looked behind me to see the man in the rusty scuba diving suit staring at us.
“Johnny! Why didn’t you tell us the balcony was breaking!” Danny screamed.
“I’m sorry, but can we talk about this later. I think we got something on our hands.” I said.
It was then when I turned my emotions around, started to become a better friend and went off to find the scuba diver and save Laurence Cove from being sold out while everybody moves away because they are frightened of the man. The man ran up the curved staircases and we chased after him. I saw old boxes and pictures from the early 1900’s. Then my friends and I reached the top floor.
We saw the man once again. He ran to the opposite side of the roof, and the next step he took his foot got stuck in a net and he was pulled upside down.
“You could thank us for that,” Danny said.
“How did you do that?” I asked.
“Well with a little of my so called genius thoughts and Danny’s football play calling skills.” Jenny said.
“Well I’m sorry about earlier, but let’s go and find out who this really is,” Johnny said
I pulled the helmet off the man to see Roger Barnidge, the former mayor of Laurence Cove.
“Just as I suspected. He was trying to scare off everyone into moving to sell the town and make money for his own needs and benefits,” Jenny said.
“And I would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for you meddling, snooping kids!” Roger Barnidge shouted.
I called the cops, and they took the former mayor away to jail.
“Come on let’s go home,” I said to Jenny and Danny
We all walked home, and after that day everything went back to normal. I wasn’t depressed anymore because I knew I had my two best friends with me no matter what and they had me.
