Friends
Another day where the ignorants wastes the day away.
Where the children run to the affray.
Where I sit and dream about a place far far away.
But there is no way that I can go.
Somewhere that the birds flow.
Where the ravens crow.
Somewhere that I can spread my wings and fly away free.
I sat my pen and paper down. My thoughts suddenly disrupted by the screaming voices in the other room. I hop up and head over to the living room. The sight of Beer and the cubs game illuminated the room. My uncle and his other bum friends were hanging out
“Can you guys keep it down I'm trying to write in the other room”
“That can wait.” My 40 year old uncle states and he drops liquid cheese on his beer belly.
“This game is the most important game of the year for the Cubs.”
Ignoring everything he just said I stomped the the front door picking up my bag that is heavier than a bag of bricks.
“I'm going to school Mom.”
“Okay I love you see you later.” I routinely walked across the hall of the apartment like every school morning and knocked on Thaddeus’s door. His mom a heavy set stay at home mother opened the door deliberately.
“ Hi Mrs. Myles, is Black... I mean Thaddeus ready to go to school?”
“Thaddeus your friend is waiting on you!” Meanwhile she slams the door in my face. Thaddeus walking as he pulls on his belt. I did not even want to ask him what was wrong with his mother we just started heading to the bus stop. I showed he the poem I had written that morning.
“Black are you ready for this game against Brother Rice I heard they are ranked number 2 in state.”
“That rank means nothing because I have more D1 scholarships than every kid on that team.” I was expecting that answer seeing that he says that every week yet we lose every time. The bus pulled up a block away from the school like usual. We made our journey into the ancient looking school building. I walked through the metal detectors and gave my usually handshake with the school security officer. Thaddeus and I split up and I went straight to creative writing. As I sat down I looked up and saw a new girl walk in with a N.W.A. t shirt on as she sat next to me.
“ Hola mi amo es Luci y tu.” I look at her with a very confused look on my face
“Sorry I don't speak spanish”
“Me either, but my name is Luci how about you.”
“My name is Adam. Nice to meet you” the class soon started and we didn’t speak until I felt a tap on my shoulder.
“I'm new to this area and I want to go out and meet new people. So I was wondering if you know if there are any parties after the football game tonight.”
“Yea I think there is one at Peter’s house tonight. If you want you can come with me after the game tonight.”
“Yea that would be great I will meet you in the rowdy section at the game tonight.” She skipped out of the room as I followed. The rest of the school day I was thinking about Luci. There is this feeling she gives me. Not your normal Junior high crush, but something weird. Almost like lust, but i don't know if she feels the same. After school I met with Thaddeus at the bus stop to go home.
“I met this new girl today in Creative Writing. She seems kind of weird, but she is pretty cute “
“Thats dope what is her name”
“ She said her name was Luci”
“Oh you met Luci too? She started talking to this kid in front of me in Spanish and he had no idea what to say.” In my mind I started laughing but I had shown a different expression on the outside.
“Yea she did that to me too. I don’t know what the point of that was.” the conversation ended as our bus ride had ended. I walked into my house and went straight into my room seeing that no one else was home I laid down on my twin sized bed. It creaked as in plopped my body down. Almost instantly as I shut my eyes I fell asleep. I woke up to my uncle storming into the house as he threw his boots off and pounced onto the couch. He turned on the tv and it started blaring “I Believe I Can Fly” by R Kelly. When that happened I already knew that he had a bad day at the dump. Without saying a word I threw on my school sweater with Jordans and stormed out of the apartment. I needed some time to think so I just walked the two miles to school. I got to the game early enough to where I did not have to pay. When I got in the game there was 3 people two parents and one person with; a fake red afro, a blue shirt with red suspenders, striped red shorts, and a long pair of striped red and blue socks. Of course that person was sitting in the rowdy section. The closer I got up the section I noticed it was a girl. I started walking up the stands to find a good spot and the girl starts yelling my name.
“Adam! Adam come here!” My eyes glanced up to the person a I realized that it was Luci. I crept up the stairs wondering why she was so weird, and why does my stomach get butterflies when I see her.
“Hey Luci nice outfit.” i could not believe that came out of my mouth. She looked like a creepy clown without face paint.
“Thanks I decided to try and fit in with the rowdies.” The night went well and we continued to talk about many different things. I got to know more and more about her. Come to find out she is not as weird as I thought she was. She is just a new girl trying to find and make friends in a new area. Nothing wrong with that.
After the game we met up with Thaddeus and walked to the party together. When we walked in the smell of marijuana hit us instantly.
“Guys I think we should ditch this party the cops are gonna be all over this place”
“Don't be a panzy we will be fine this is my type of party.” as she walks over to the couch the people were smoking at and asked for a blunt. Thaddeus and I looked at each other with a puzzled look on our face. We could not see her being a pothead coming. A girl pull thaddeus away asking for a dance. That always happens to use because of how popular thaddeus is. I’m always the person that gets left out. For majority of the night I conversated in the kitchen where people were not really dancing.Suddenly Luci comes out to me with a blunt in her hand.
“Joe you have to take a hit of this.”
“No my mom always told me never to do that it will ruin my brain cells.”
“It doesn’t ruin brain cells it makes you more creative.”
“I don’t know it says it on the internet also.”
“Come on Joe you have to try it it makes this party way more fun.” I looked at her, then the blunt, then back at her. The temptation of smoking it is running so high. Just one hit can't hurt.
“Fine i'll try some.” I grab the blunt and bring it up to my lips. I take a deep breath in. my breathe was cut off in the middle with a painful nonstopping cough came over me. Suddenly a slight burn came over my throat.
“I can’t stop coughing.” I continue to cough uncontrollably
“That is what happens the first time you smoke.” everything slowly started to feel slower. My body started to feel more exhausted.
“How does it feel.” I just stared at her and took some more hits. The rest of that night we just sat on the couch sharing different blunts. Around 1 in the morning we decided it was about time to head out. On the way home Luci and for the next few months the leaves began to fall. Thaddeus and I were walking home from a later another party discussing which college Thaddeus would like to go to. We were walking up to Elm street and saw a group of Gangster Disciples hanging out in front of a house immediately Thaddeus and I began to walk down the alley instead of the gang infested street. The alley was complete pitch black but anything is better than walking through that street. I heard faint footsteps behind us. I turned around to get hit by a brick wall. Those Gangster Disciples were jumping us. They threw me on the ground as they stomped Thaddeus in the head continuously. After about a minute they ran away as a police car sped down the alley. I look over at what looks like a train ran over a body. Thaddeus was indescribable. His face deformed the police asked what happened and I was frozen I was not even sure what happened.
