The Turning Point
“H-Hello please anybody help!” The sound of desperation had never been so evident in his voice before. “Please, somebody help. Oh god.” He closed his eyes and tightened his eyelids, hoping that when he saw the world again he’d been in the warm comfortable room he came to every night. His safe haven. Every morning he’d wake up to his countless football accolades; “Most Valuable Player”, “Player of The Year”, “All-American”. It would give him a rush of confidence that would make him feel like he was on top of the world. He was the talk of not only his own school, but every school he played against. Jimmy Odette or more “Mr. Football”, he was untouchable. Literally untouchable, not one player had ever been able to tackle him the whole season. But he had finally met his match, and everything had finally caught up to him.
There's no way that this was happening to him. He was too cool. Things like this never happened to him. The blurry image of he and his team celebrating with bottles of vodka never seemed to leave his head. The semi-final they had just won, seemed so far away now. The Audi his father had bought for him as a gift for was nothing more but a twisted piece of metal turned upside down in the middle of the Main Street he’d driven on so many times. All that was left now were the cracked bottles of alcohol sprawled across the icy cement, and small streaks of blood on the interior of the car he’s once showed off so much. He was truly alone, with the exception of the small sound of snow falling from the night sky. If there was a rock bottom, this was it.
“Hey! can you hear me? I'm here to help you. I need your name man.”
Jimmy had opened his eyes again, but the snow had stopped.
“Hey! Wake up, stay with me. I want to get you out of here but you gotta help me out.” The red flashing lights shined into the wreckage.
“I.. I’m here please get me the hell out of here!” His voice broke as he spoke. “My name is Jimmy, Jimmy Odette.” Jimmy reached for his seatbelt but all he felt was a wave of intense pain rush through his whole arm. Jimmy screamed.
“Jimmy try not to move, we have people on the way to get you out of there.”
A feeling of relief entered his heart at the thought of this nightmare being over. But as time passed the feeling of relief diminished. Time slowly ticked away. 5 minutes then 10. Jimmy began to heat the sirens sound in the distance. What followed was the loud hum of some sort of machine. The weight of the car on top of him slowly vanished. That’s when he began to notice the pain, and what he was feeling. The car had Jimmy pinned from his stomach region down to his legs. The heat from the wreckage had scorched his clothes, and his legs were covered in deep cuts and gashes. The horror of the sight made him want to run to the ambulance truck that waited for him. His hands pushed up from the floor, his stomach lifted along with them, but his legs... his legs never budged. It was almost as if they disagreed with the rest of his body. It was as if the message to get up and get help didn’t make it to the rest of his body.
“I can't move! Please someone please. I can’t move oh god I can’t move.” Jimmy screamed as his tears fell from his eyes.
The EMS stared at Jimmy in despair. All he could do was relay his protocol message in his soothing that he was taught to speak in. But they both knew. Jimmy would never be the same.
“Get me out of here please. Please man I cant feel my legs! I can’t feel my- I can-.” Jimmy’s vision wen dark and the world around him faded away. Jimmy felt himself pass away on the rough icy pavement, with soft snowflakes falling on his face. He closed his eyes and began to think. He began to think things that have never crossed his mind before. The perfect he knew was over, and the thought of whatever came next was what scared him the most.
“Jimmy. Jimmy can you hear me?
“I think he’s waking up”
Jimmy’s eyes slightly creaked open. The light from the room rushed into his eyes. Jimmy winced. All he could hear was the constant beeping sound that came from a machine somewhere in the room. Beep...Beep...Beep. Jimmy glanced to his right to see his mother's purse set on a light blue chair.
“I’m glad you're finally awake. My name is Dr.Auger”
The doctor’s deep, rough voice seemed to have come out of nowhere. The tall black man wore a lab coat that draped to the floor. He wore glasses that were much too big for his face. But spoke in a tone that commanded respect, and attention.
“What happened? Whats going on?” Jimmy asked
“Jimmy you’re lucky to be even asking me that question. You’ve been in a terrible accident. Jimmy you were drunk man alcohol was everywhere”
Jimmy heard the words coming from the doctor's mouth but didn’t want to listen. All he could think about was getting out of this situation.
“Jimmy to give it to you straight-”
Tears began to well up in his eyes. Jimmy knew that whatever news came next would kill him inside.
“A piece of metal has lodge itself in the lower portion of your spine. It’s paralyzed you from the waist down, and you may not be able to ever walk again.”
Jimmy’s face darkened. The tears were absent but all he could feel was sadness. Empty. Everything he’d received in life was just gone in the blink of an eye.
“Thank you Doctor. I’d like to leave now.”
Jimmy hadn’t been in school for the following weeks. However adjusting to the wheelchair wasn’t a problem. He’d been in one countless times before for breaking numerous bones in his legs. This was the new way to get around. Ever since he’d been discharged Jimmy had one goal on his mind. Finals. Everyone knew about the accident, not only his supporters, but his doubters as well. He knew of the countless people probably happy about the accident. His dream since a freshman was to win a state championship with his team, and nothing would get in his way. Nothing.
The night of the game finally came. Jimmy had rode on the bus with his team into the game. He sat in the back of the bus in solace. All of his focus was on the task at hand. The championship game. Sounds of the crowd echoed from the James P. megadome as the bus pulled up. The driver stopped, and before anyone moved Jimmy called for attention.
“Boys.” The bus went completely silent. Even the engine of the bus was silent. “Win.”
The team erupted into invigorating screams. The energy carried on into the game. Jimmy’s team battled against the defending state champion for three straight quarters down to the wire. 4th quarter 40 seconds left. Down 3. Jimmy’s dream began to fade away in front of him.
“Timeout.” Jimmy screamed to the ref.
“Timeout white bench.” Exclaimed the ref.
In the huddle Jimmy drew a hail mary play, and with tears in his eyes he looked to his teammates. Win. The team rushed onto the field, and in a hurry hiked the ball has the clock counted down. Jimmy watched his receivers flee down field. The backup quarterback threw a deep pass into the endzone into coverage.
Catch.
