A Streak of Bad Luck
Amber woke up with the major case of bedhead. Hair was sticking up on all sides of her head. It was like someone purposefully made it that way. She groaned as she rolled out of bed and trudged over to her dresser. She slipped into a green shirt with a dark brown football on the front, and some jeans before heading to the bathroom. Amber glanced at her reflection in the mirror and sighed a deep sigh. Grabbing a comb, she attempted to tame the wild mass of light brown hair on her head. Having little success with her hair, Amber turned her attention to her face. She had sleep in her eyes and a gigantic pimple on the end of her nose. “This day can only get better, right?” Amber said to herself, “At least I don’t have to go to school!”
Days with no school means one thing, free time with friends! Amber left for her best friend’s house promptly at 10:00AM. As she reached to knock on the door, it swung open.
“Hi Rachel! What would you like to do today?” Amber asked.
“I was thinking we could go to the park. What do you think?”
“That sounds good,”
Together the girls raced to the park. Amber was so stoked. Now that she is 12, she had the privilege of going to the park without her parents tagging along! The sun was hot this morning and shined brightly on the friends as they swung on the swings.
“So you know how I went shopping yesterday after school?,” Amber exclaimed.
“Yeah.”
“Well, I saw a yellow lab with green eyes in the front window of the pet shop. I’ve always wanted a dog with green eyes. After all, green is my favorite color. I asked my mom if I could get her, and she said that she wasn’t getting me anything today, because my birthday is tomorrow. I’ll just have to wait and see”.
“A puppy would be the best birthday present in the world! I hope you get her.” Rachel replied.
The sun rose higher in the sky and the girls soon realized that they ought to head home. As Amber jumped off the swings, she heard a loud ripping sound. She looked down at her favorite jeans and was horrified! The back pocket had ripped open and her underwear was completely exposed! Stretching her shirt down to cover herself, the girls hurried home.
Once home and comfortably in a new pair of pants, Amber set her mind to complete her writing assignment for school.
“Jake I need you to get off of the computer so I can finish some homework.” Amber said.
“But I’m almost done with this level.”, her brother grumbled.
“Alright. You can finish that level but ONLY that level,understand?,” ordered Amber.
“You can have twenty minutes and if you don’t finish the level too bad so sad.”
“Fine” Jack agreed.
Amber went to go read her favorite book that she read four times already. It is a book called “As Simple as it Seems.”
After reading several chapters, Amber realized she should get to work on her writing piece. She was nearly halfway finished.
“Alright time to get off the computer,” Amber hissed.
“No!” Jake screamed.
“But you promised,” Amber pointed out, “I need to use it for homework.”
“But I haven’t finished the level,” Jake whined.
“I told you that even if you didn’t finish the level, I would still get the computer.” yelled Amber. She was about to explode any moment now. She could feel the anger bubbling inside her.
“What on earth is going on in here?” asked Amber’s mom.
“Well he won’t get of the computer when...”
“And she didn’t let me finish the level.” Jake interrupted.
“Yeah, well I need it for homework.”
“Amber you can use my computer. Okay?”, mom suggested.
“I guess,” Amber agreed.
Amber’s mom’s computer was so slow! It took 15 minutes just to get to the right website. “Ugg this computer is so slow.” Amber mumbled to herself.
“Amber it’s time to go,” mom hollard.
“Go? Go where?”
“Remember,we are having dinner at Grandma’s house?”
“Can I bring your computer, so I can work on my assignment?” Amber asked.
“No grandma and papa will have one.” Mom replied.
“Alright,” Amber agreed.
For dinner, her Grandmother served chicken with mash potatoes and gravy, her favorite! She and her brother broke the wishbone. Jake got the winning end of the wishbone. Amber’s bad luck continued. After dinner, she went to work on her homework and the computer crashed.
~~~~~~~~~~
Beep Beep Beep went Amber’s alarm clock. Amber jolted awake as it was her birthday. I wonder if my bad luck has ended yet wondered Amber. She quickly got dressed and went to the bathroom. It seemed that her pimple had grown twice as big! It was the size of Texas! Panic snuck when she realized she hadn't finished her writing piece yet. Scampering up the stairs she ran to the computer, but it was already taken by her brother again.
“Jake move I need to use the computer for homework!” Amber yelled. She began to hyperventilate. “But you were suppose to finish it yesterday,” Jake snapped.
“Yeah well you were hogging the computer,” Amber screamed. Amber was about to shove her brother off the chair when her mom walked in. Amber couldn’t help it she was exploding with anger.“This is all your fault. If you hadn’t let him stay on the computer I would have had my homework done by now. But no... computer games are more important than homework. Now I’m going to get a huge fat F on my assignment for not getting my writing piece done when I couldn’t do anything about it.”
“Hey do not talk to me that way!” mom yelled. “I’ll email to your teacher explaining everything alright. Now Jake how about you let your sister finish her homework.”
“Fine,” Jake yelled storming out of the room. Amber hopped onto the computer and set to work as she only had ten minutes to work on it because she had to get ready for school. In a flash she was in the car on the way to school.
When she arrived at St. Petersberg Middle School she hopped out of the blue SUV, and ran inside. Two minutes stood between her and the tardy bell. The school looked quite gloomy, which was a bit odd because it was the second to last week of school. She ran down to her home room just as the clock struck 7:30. I made it just in time thought Amber.
“Hey Amber! Over here” Rachel called.
Amber slipped into an empty seat next to her friend. In their first period Science class, they are learning about space.
“Can anyone tell me what happens when you enter a black hole?” asked Mrs. Tomsin. Amber raised her hand as high as it would go. Mrs. Thompson's eyes looked over the rows and landed on Amber.
“Yes Amber?” said Mrs. Tomsin.
“No one knows exactly what happens,” Amber stated promptly.
“That is correct! Thank you Amber.”
Maybe my day is starting to turn around thought Amber!
After science class, Amber and her friends, Rachel and Ashley headed to their lockers.
“Hey Amber where did you get those clothes? At the dump?” Saige asked cruelly. (Saige is one of the meanest girls in school. For reasons that Amber doesn’t understand, Saige is also very popular.)
“Yeah, I did!” exclaimed Amber sarcastically.
“Cause I was going to say it doesn’t even look like your clothes are good enough for the dump!”
“Back off Saige!” Rachel yelled. Which caused several heads to turn their way.
“Amber, do you need your little friends to save you?” asked Saige.
“Just ignore her.” Ashley suggested.
“No! I’m sick and tired of her. No, I don’t need my friends to stick up for me,”Amber snapped.
“Oh right I forgot you have your mommy,” Saige replied back.
At this reply, all of Sagie’s posse laugh hysterically.
“Yes I do have a mom. I have a mom who cares for me and loves me. To bad you don’t know what that feels like considering your mom’s never around,” Amber growled.
“At least my mom can afford good clothes unlike yours. From the looks of it you can’t even afford personal hygiene.” Saige replied.
Amber was about to cry but she would not give Saige the satisfaction of letting her see her reaction.
“What?!,” Ashley exclaimed.
“Do you need a hearing aid? I said ‘At least my mom can afford good clothes unlike yours. From the looks of it you can’t even afford personal hygiene. ” Saige said growing louder just to make a point.
“No she doesn’t! But I think there's something wrong with your mouth, to bad there’s no an invention to clean it out.” Amber replied. She was done with Saige so with that she and her friends stormed away from Saige and her gang.
“Can you believe her?” asked Rachel.
“I didn’t know she had the guts to say that,” Ashley told her. Amber couldn’t stand it any longer she began to cry.
“Um... I’ll catch up with you later okay,” Amber tried to say without crying. She turned around and headed towards her math class.
When she entered the classroom she noticed that all of her teacher’s poster’s were taken down. She also noticed that she was five minutes late and that everyone was staring at her. Amber quickly walked to a brown, wooden desk that had writing all over it saying random things like, “What’s up loser”, and “I like Mickey Mouse”, and all kinds of other stuff.
“Amber, I’m glad you could join us. I was just telling the class that we will be taking our test on dividing fractions tomorrow. Now, I have a work packet for you with twenty five problems on it.” said Mrs. Andrews. She then passed out the packet to the class.
“You may begin to work on your packet now. Amber will you come over here? I need to talk to you,” Mrs. Andrews directed.
Amber trudged over to Mrs. Andrews regretting what was coming. “Amber, would you please tell me why you were late?” she asked.
“Well... um... Saige stopped me in the hall and started teasing my friends and I. I was tired of her teasing us...mainly me. So I tried to stand up for myself.”
“Why haven’t you told a teacher?”
“I didn’t want to get teased any more.”
“Well I’m afraid that I’ll have to have a talk with Saige,”
“I just want to go home and forget about today. This is the worst birthday ever!”
Amber was on the edge of crying all over again.
That afternoon Amber was feeling a bit better. She was able to make it through lunch. Saige hadn’t said any more to her; although she did make gagging sounds as she and her posse passed by Amber and her friends at lunch. Amber was able to tough it out for the rest of the day. At the end of the day Amber’s mom pulled up to the front of the school.
“How was school?” mom questioned.
“Horrible! Didn’t you get the email from my teacher?” Amber asked.
“I did, I’m sorry honey”
After some time in the car they finally got home. Amber walked inside and her mouth dropped open. A yellow lab with green eyes met her at the door.
“What?!?” asked Amber.
“After I got the email I thought it might be nice if you got the only thing you wanted. I also got you new jeans.” she said pointing towards the coffee table.
“Oh thank you so much!” Amber exclaimed. She swung her arms around her mom. Maybe today wasn’t so bad after all.
