gum
I don't believe that the production alone of bubble gum has a large impact on the environment however the final product sure does. One thing about gum is its bright pink color the red dye used to color our gum is made from cochineal insects.Carminic acid is extracted from the female cochineal insects and is treated to produce carmine, carmine produces a range of different shades and hues of the color red. The dried body of the female insect is 14–26% carminic acid. Artificial dyes can have a negative impact on the environment. Not only do aquatic ecosystems suffer due to food dye effluents, but we do as well. Food dye that has been improperly discarded can contaminate the freshwater we drink. Beyond that, common food dyes such as Red 40 and Yellow 5 are contaminated with carcinogens (5)
Gum its self without the dye can also be harmful. After chewing, most people throw their chewed up gum on the ground. resulting in environmental trash known as 'gum pollution. Each year, chewing gum generates more than 105 tonnes of "plastic" garbage. the discarded non-biodegradable residue of the gum produces plastic pollution. I belive that the UN’s goal of sustainable consumption and production is possible if gum manufacturers were able to make gum more biodegradable and had less invasive food dyes
