Does Technology Make Us More Alone?

“Put your phone away while you’re at the dinner table!” New age Technology (iphones, ps4, xbox one. ect.) is in many hands of the new generation, connecting many across the world; however, some think that this new technology is having huge negative effects on humans. Technology is making us more alone instead of connecting us. People are using social media more frequently instead of going out and meeting people. Also, many people are playing video games that are affecting their health.

Video games are affecting many people’s health. According to an article in the Journal of Neurology, Neuropsychology and Psychiatry, “29 percent of patients with epilepsy suffered videogame-induced seizures.” (DeLoatch et al.)Patients with epilepsy would risk their health just play a video game. This shows that these addicting video game are putting people’s life’s at major risk.

Social media is making humans socially awkward. According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, “Social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media.”(“The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals”) Social media can sometimes make people chose a social media site relationship over a real world relationship.

The over usage of technology is starting to cause obesity.“Although one traditional focus is on the amount and type of foods kids eat, one study says that obesity is on the rise, not just because of food, but because as we use more technology, we exercise less.”(“The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals”) This quote is stating that these newer video games are causing obesity, not only for kids, but for some adults too.

Some say that playing video games can help with hand eye coordination and reaction time; however, playing video games too much can result in changing the way kids think, feel, and put privacy and safety at risk. “For example, the article says that while video games may condition the brain to pay attention to multiple stimuli, they can lead to distraction and decreased memory.(“The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals”)” Playing video games may help with multiple stimuli, but they can reduce the memory of the people playing the video games.

As you can see new age technology is having many negative effects on society. It’s starting to cause obesity for some, while social media makes some people socially awkward. Also video games are affecting people’s health.

I love it! I am writing an argumentative essay about this topic and I totally agree with your statement, that it is making us socially awkward.
