brown skinned
I have kinky hair
And full lips
I’m considered the intelligent one
Off the entire ship.
My parents were queens and kings
Yet when I came to America I was treated as a thing
Even as a child I began to wonder
Was it because of my brown skin that brought the thunder?
I encountered racism and discrimination
Being treated as nothing brought years of frustration
Years of slow progress has changed things my friend
For now society can see past my deep brown skin!
