My Girl
I've left a terrible wake
In the midst of my mistake
Your mother was defeated
And your brothers were mistreated
So now there is nothing I can do
Except say this to you
My beautiful daughter
I know I was a bad father
But I love you dearly
Even if you can't see this clearly
You brought me back to earth
Since the moment of your birth
I was warped in the hue
Of your eyes so big and blue
I loved you at first glance
If only I had another chance
I'd take you to the ocean
never leave you broken
I'd lay in the sun
And watch you run
You'd never be afraid
Because I'd always be your aid
I'd kill the scary snakes
And avoid deep lakes
I would not let my choices decide my fate
And I would never consume such hate
I would listen to you sing
And never let my phone ring
All the things you love and do
I love them because they are you
You love to learn
So I'd teach at every turn
It's the only thing I can really do
But I'm sure your mothers taught you
She's incredibly smart Olivia
You should see her play trivia
Speaking of your mother
How are your brothers
Remember the night they fooled you
even through the tears you knew
It was out of love that they teased
But I shouldn't have been pleased
I wish I could go back
Fix it all and stay on track
My last good day
Was sometime in May
It was just us shopping
We spent all day talking
In my mind your laughter still stays
Your smile beams like rays
I know your trust is flimsy
But I wish I could take you Disney
We could feed the hidden elephants
And find the weirdest plants
But now I can't
So I guess this is just my rant
As always you are all I wish for
I've never regretted something more
I'm proud of you dear
Even if it's unclear
Keep your spark and you'll change the world
Whether you alter women's rights or are simply heard
With you anything is possible at all
Just promise to never let your spirit fall
You're a warrior my girl, this you are
I know you will accomplish a lot and go very far
Now just promise me one more thing and I'll let you be
Olivia, please don't ever end up like me.

My Girl is a poem I wrote for a project, based on an interview with my friend, where she talked about her father and his death due to alcohol and drugs. A lot of the poem includes her answers to the questions I had, whether they were about her opinions on fate, elephants, women's rights, or even her moms amazing trivia skills.
