Freedom to Hope
You held freedom in the darkest hour
You faced prejudice with a smile
When others saw heartbreak,
You saw the silver lining in the distance
Writing it all down for us to find in a gift from your father
With all lost, you kept the freedom to hope
Stuck in an attic for 2 years with nothing
During the day you didn’t exist
Hiding in the silence that covered you
Nothing but a memory to those you knew
Your hope lived on in the silence
When forgotten, you kept the freedom to hope
Eight people stuck together
Running like a cat from a mouse
Running from the guns that chased them
You held hands with them united
Hoping for a future
During the hardest times, you kept the freedom to hope
1945, the veil of silence lifted
You could feel freedom slipping through your fingers
Yet the sunshine called you
Along with death
Even when death called, you kept the freedom to hope
Do you remember?
Do you remember the last time Mouschi meowed?
Do you remember the last time you tasted a sweet New Year’s cake?
Do you remember the last time you held your family in an embrace?
Do you remember the tape sticking to your fingers
as the pictures went on the walls?
Do you remember your dreams of being a journalist writing everyday?
Do you remember the hope you held?
Even though you believed you wouldn’t be remembered
The world knows your name
We now bear witness to you
Without perfection we spread your word
And fight against prejudice
Through your diary of memories we hear you whispering
Tickling our ears with what you have at all times
Even though you’re gone
You keep the freedom to hope.

This piece was written in honor of Anne Frank for a project in my English class. We read the play about her diary and I was very moved. This is about her and the legacy she left behind.
