This Little Light of Mine
I long to see the sky. Blue without a sin,
And to feel the furtive brush of the breeze upon my skin,
But the air is dank and imbued with a chill.
Your words heavy as a truck, almighty and shrill.
I’m trapped in a web, your gossamer of lies,
No longer comprehending the truth and kindness you despise,
You flourish in hate and lurk in despair,
And you break the souls of those who can care.
These walls, they divide me. They split me in half,
They hide my spirit under constant attack,
It’s no laughing matter, no meaning obscure,
I am no longer the girl that sits shy and demure.
I feel the quiet eloquence of the dark,
shaping my vision, leaving no sight unmarked,
I see the words which you beleaguer the weak,
You prey upon those whom are modest and meek.
But my love is the single candle in the corner,
Which halts your words, lays them still and sojourner,
My passion for life is the gust that blows open the door,
Letting in the light to shine evermore.
