You Are My Beat
The notes flow from the world
Into the composers mind
Then onto the paper
Then the paper is shipped all over the world
For people everywhere to enjoy
As I am sitting there
Watching as the papers get passed around
The flutes, trumpets, and saxophones
Then the clarinets
From person to person
Until it finally gets to me
A single sheet of paper
My friend next to me
Deeply inhales the smell
She’s always doing that
I just smirk and then look
At my paper so neat
So straight and clean
Filled with lines
And dots
And triangles pointing
All different directions
I remember when I first
Saw a paper like this
Its symbols looking
Like a foreign language
I had no idea
That I would feel like I do now
Back in my chair I study the paper
Just like you always told me
I remember STARS
I will always remember
Then I looked up
And you weren't there
And something in my heart broke
Some strange man was in your place
But the show must go on
So I played
Tapping my foot
Keeping the beat
Even after the piece was complete
Keeping the beat in my heart
