The mourning sirens
She isn't like most people
when she hears sirens in the distance she opens her window and
looks out
and she wonders
how the springtime scent could be so nice while
there's someone those sirens are meant for
there's someone who might be dying and yet
she smells the air and it smells like
a new beginning
maybe to her it smells like a new beginning
but to the one those sirens screamed for
the few minutes they blared
the air smelt like a cruel end
the sirens that blare for the small child who swallowed a toy
or for the elderly man with high cholesterol
do not celebrate new beginnings
