The Trombone
I remember the day I found it
I was just a young skeleton
It was sitting in the garbage.
I had never seen one up until then and I was fascinated by it.
It was dirty, and dinged up, but I felt a need to have it
I brought it home, and the smile on Papyrus’s face was worth it
“Sans that is the oddest instrument I’ve ever seen. Play it for me.”
But every time I tried to blow on it, not a sound came out.
Papyrus looked disappointed and walked away.
After that I cleaned it up till it shined.
Yet it still didn’t sound right when I played it.
A whining noise came every time I blew air into it.
Papyrus tells me because I’m too talented to play,
But I know that’s just how he is.
I love my little brother, but he’s misguided to most things.
He enjoyed looking at it after school, considering he had no friends to hang out with.
But i wanted to do more for him, give back some of the happiness he gives me.
So I took it to that nerdy kid, who is in my class, to fix it.
She was fascinated with it as much as I was.
I usually only showed up occasionally to check on how it was
Sometimes when I came over there was a loud aggressive fish girl
Those days, the nerdy girl didn’t get much work done, with blushing and mumbling all over the place.
When she finally finished it, I went to give her a high five.
Poor nerd didn’t know what it was, so I taught her.
After that I played every chance I could.
From the loud brassy sound
To the smell of burning food in the mornings
That was life for us
Then Frisk came along.
They changed the way Papyrus viewed humans
Undyne didn’t kill them either.
Things were changing and it was strange
But when we were freed to the human world
I kept my trombone in my jacket
For when Pap and I get our own place
We can go back to those days of
Abrasive noises and burnt spaghetti.
