these are nights
when words put in my mind
overwhelming and unkind
silently shrill

and i am-
a hot mess
eyes full of mist
lying in my bad
burning holes in the ceiling

straining to chase the sleepless crowd
out of my head
to end that wistful song
playing far too many times
get it out of my mind

Thoughts
not even the sweetest friend
a defiant cure
the hardest drugs
obscure
