We Were Told
The boy walking past
Lets filth
Fall from his resigned lips
He offends
Just for the sock
Just to feel something
For a second
We were told it would be better
By now
We were told cars would fly
And love would be everywhere
That's what all the progress
Promised
But everything
Is just more of a mess
He doesn't care
He does what he can
To mess it up more
Because really
What's the point anymore?

This was inspired by hearing two boys talking about how 9/11 was their favorite holiday, and it made me wonder who would say that. The only thing I could think of was that they felt it didn't matter what they said or did, that everything was messed up anyway. I see this over and over again, in different kids, in different places, in different experiences. After everything we have heard, it seems hard to believe there is a bright future.
