Daddy's Womb | Teen Ink

Daddy's Womb MAG

April 23, 2008
By Anonymous

i asked my father if i could swim,
and he said that i would drown.
The Sea would imprison me – he said
if my feet had left the ground.

So i walked out to the water,
and cried out – how ’bout now!
He said, a little bit further, Son,
and then you’ll leave the ground.

i stepped on sand then stone,
from hollow ground to sturdy.
The sky was at my level as I
gazed at the birdie.

The Sea brought me a new idea,
the urge to flee to the high.

i asked my Father if i could fly,
and he said, sure, Son – go try.

i jumped as high as i could.
Still, i landed on the ground.
i saw my Father pull on a chain,
then i knew that i was bound.

Really nice poem. Also a poem that actually rhymes instead of a massive, structureless paragraph filled with mundane thoughts formatted in the style of a poem.

Eleanor Roosevelt - "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why we call it 'The Present'"<br /> <br /> Emily Dickinson - "Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all."

I am inspired by this beautifully written poem. So much feelings/emotions was incorporated; making the words flow. I love the idea of the chain which symbolizes the protection of a father, and at the same time could also symbolize the limits of the child because of his/her fathers grasp. It could be interpreted in many ways which is interesting. This poem though was just in all, a masterpiece.

This is a really interesting poem and could be interpreted in different ways. The last line sent shivers down my spine, and as a metaphor, a chain is a perfect way to describe the relationship of parent to child.

I keep coming back to this poem. I can't count how many times I've read it. This is a true work of art, something every writer wants to produce.
